Lohja
A small rectangular, 2 storey residence with an attached warehouse storage space located in Lohja, Finland. The brief from the client was to maximise the concept of ‘open-plan’ on the upper ground floor, maintain their budget whilst incorporating the list of room functions they wanted.
The clients wanted to move away from a traditional Finnish design and include a more modern and up-to-date look, with several options presented.
Status: Completed
The front covered porch has been turned into a new entrance lobby with half height glazed sides. The old front door has been replaced with a new glazed door & window set to allow as much light into the stairs space as possible. The existing wall between the two stair flights has been replaced with a balustrade and the storage area above removed to allow the entrance space to be full height. The wall separating the kitchen has been reduced in height to give a much more welcoming and open feeling.
The kitchen and dining room are now one large space with the living room widened and extended. This is achieved due to the roof construction being an A frame supported from the exterior walls, allow for internal walls to be removed; thus creating the open-plan concept required. The WC remains in place with some of the existing surrounding walls so to give a clear separation of space with the rest of this floor plan and allowing the two sides of this layout to have their own defined space and function.
At the basement level the existing fireplace has been made a focal point of the living/entertaining/cinema room with a utility room adjacent to the stairs. A Bar area has been proposed which compliments the location of the wine cellar under the stairs and has easy access from the living room. The master bedroom has a walk-in-wardrobe with access through sliding pocket doors, and the enclosed WC, bathroom and sauna finish off this floor.
